The Weekly Cartridge – The .300 Savage

The .300 Savage, designed by Savage Arms in 1920. A versatile and effecting hunting cartridge.

One of Savage arms cartridges was the .300 Savage. The 300 Savage was designed with the model 99 and the model 1920 in mind.

Savage had been producing the .303 savage which had done quite well but being an odd size and lots of .30 cal projectiles coming into the market along with other cartridges like the .308 it only made sense to change things up.

Savage also wanted to create a cartridge that would function in the model 99 lever action as well as any bolt action rifles. The case is very similar to a .308 Winchester however it has a shorter neck to help it fit and function better.

Little known fact is the first center fire rifle that I ever shot was a Model 99 lever action chambered in .300 savage. It got me started in the world of firearms. All thanks to a coworker who became a friend and let me try it out one day when we went bow hunting.

While the 300 savage is shorter than the .308 Win it still does well. When loaded with a 150gr projectile the 300 savage gets a velocity of 2,600 fps and has a MPBR over 300 yards. Which isn’t bad for allot of hunting situations. Obviously, hand loading opens up allot of different options when it comes to projectile and ammunition choices.

As far as trajectory goes the with this 150gr projectile travelling at 2600fps you can expect to see the following numbers:

200 Yards: 5.072 inches of drop.

500 Yards: 82.109 inches of drop.

1000 Yards: 669.966 inches of drop.

(Please note the above trajectory information was pulled from http://gundata.org/ballistic-calculator/ )
